In the worlds, before monkey…no such luck I’m afraid. This film is a mess. I have seen the 1960s animated version and prefer it has it has a much better spirit and pacing and clearer story.
I am not sure why they needed to add the Demon King and Guardian of the Southern Gate as they just seemed to be pointless in the story as it was Monkey himself that caused most of the problems himself.
The story is still sort of familiar, but adds the Demon King having a constant battle with Heaven and he is cast from the realm with the deity who sacrifices herself to rebuild heaven inadvertently creates Monkey when one of the crystals that used to be her body falls to Earth.
The monkey suit scenes are somewhat disturbing, furries will be happy but I never need to see Monkey’s furry balls every again. Urp-lup!
I have no idea why they needed to delay this film to add all the computer graphics, I can barely tell what is going on as they try to make it into a big spectacle, but they just throw too much into it. I would have hated to see this in 3D as it would have been irritating.
I am not sure why they bothered to have real human actors in this at all, would have just been better that have totally computer generated characters since all the scenery was any way.
Chow Yun Fat has a do-nothing role as the Jade Emperor, which would be OK if he actually had some decent lines or a rocket launcher at an opportune time like in the Seventh Curse.
Donnie Yen is OK I suppose, but you can hardly tell it is him under the fursuit.
Supposedly this film is to set up future movies, but I preferred the method Conquering the Demons used as Sun Wukong only mentioned attacking heaven and they did not need to show it.
I find it hard to recommend this movie at all, there are between versions of the Journey to the West story and nothing to see here.
