Kung Fu Cult Master (1993)
Directed by: Sammo Hung Kam-Bo, Wong Jing
Tagline: "Women are cunning!"
As part of a long running feud involving the rival clans of Shaolin, the Evil Sect and the Persian Clan, a young boy's parents kill themselves rather than reveal the location of their friend Golden Lion who has captured a powerful sword.
Eight years later, the boy Chang (Jet Li) is living with the Wung To clan, but he is unable to practice Kung Fu as he was hit with the "Jinx Palm" just before his parents died.
His adoptive father tells that a Kung Fu master that he defeated long ago could have helped him, but he fell off a cliff. He also tells him that he erects every morning even though he is 100 years old.
When his adoptive father is called away, his cousin betrays him and is about to kill him when his father's former maid saves him. This is not enough to stop them falling off a cliff though.
At the bottom of the cliff, they meet the defeated Kung Fu master, who rolls around attached to a boulder. This Kung Fu master teachers him the "Solar Stance" and at the same time cures him of the Jinx Palm.
After he is taught many skills, he learns that many clans are going to attack the Evil Sect (his parent's clan), so he rushes off to see what help he can give. Will he make it in time though?
This a good movie, but the plot is confusing in some places and there are several issues that are unresolved. I have been told that there was meant to be a sequel, which never eventuated. This film was meant to establish the characters and background.
The kung fu action and performances of the supporting characters all work very well. While this movie is not one of Jet Li's best movies, it does still come highly recommended if you have seen him in the Once Upon a Time in China movies or even Lethal Weapon 4 and want to see more.
