Jiang Hu The Triad Zone (2000)
Directed by: Dante Lam
Tagline: My baby has no anus."
This movie starts with a triad boss, Jan Yim (Tony Leung Ka-Fai), smashing a bottle over a rival boss' head after he starts giving him some lip. Big Mouth, the man who had a bottle smashed over his head, said that Jan Yim is old-fashioned because he didn't know about the Internet or what an IPO is.
Jan Yim says even though it could get him into trouble, he has to 'put on a show' now and again to show the other gangs he means business. Jan Yim then introduces us to his bodyguard, an ex-soccer star called Yeung (Roy Cheung), his ex-lawyer legal council (who represented his wife in a divorce trial so they beat him up; now they are good friends), his mistress JoJo (Lee San-San) and finally his wife Sophie (Sandra Ng).
After an attempt on his life where they all hide under the car while a sniper shoots at them. Jan Yim calls a meeting with the other triad bosses. It is an extra-ordinary triad meeting and doesn't turn out how you would expect, but no real solution is found to Jan Yim's problem. Will the attempts on Jan Yim's life continue? Will his wife ever make it out of her 'hungry tigress' stage? Why does Anthony Wong make a cameo as a household God? What in the heck does "My baby has no anus" mean?
This is a strange movie for the triad genre as it changes its approach several times throughout the story, not always successfully. At first I thought it was going to be a straight triad action movie, then it changed into a love story and then they started doing comedy in the middle of everything else. For an example of a movie that manages to pull this approach off, I recommend God of Ramblers, The Return.
While it is good too see a movie that tries to do something different with the genre, it just feels like the movie can't make up its mind about what it wants to be. This movie also shouldn't be confused with the more recent film Jiang Hu which is a more traditional triad movie.
