God of Gamblers - The Return (1994)Directed by: Wong Jing
Starring: Yun-Fat Chow, Charles Heung, Tony Leung Ka Fai, Elvis Tsui, Chien-lien Wu, Chingmy Yau
Tagline: "This movie has a bit of everything in it"
Chow Yun-Fat stars as the God of Gamblers who is living quietly in France with his pregnant wife when his life is destroyed by an insane rival who wants to gamble with him. His dying wife makes him promise that he won't gamble or say that he was God of Gamblers for a year so that he won't rush off trying to get revenge.
Almost a year later he is on holiday in rural China when he meets a gang boss from Taiwan who is on holiday with his family. Later on a boat cruise they are attacked and the dying gang boss makes him promise to take his son back to Taiwan.
The kid doesn't like him and they get on poorly. They are taken in for questioning by the Captain of the local People's Army .
After the two escape they end up in an Inn that is run by three smugglers from Hong Kong who rip everyone off by having a fake police raid. When the real police turn up they are forced to run away together, but not before setting up a load of gas bottles to blow up the place they are fired upon.
The action gets a lot more fast and confusing and starts changing genres casually during the course of the film. I liked how the film went through action, drama, road movie, romance, comedy and back to drama at the end.
It is no wonder that Stephen Chow starred in a spoof of this series as this movie seems to be making fun of itself all the time. Some of Wong Jing's movies can be a bit crass, but I thought this one was very funny.
I wish Chow Yun Fat had been in more comedic roles as he seems to do well here. This film also reminds me of the funny scenes in Once a Thief that help that film zip along like it did.
The supporting actors all do well in their roles, but it is difficult to keep track of everyone towards the end.
It does slow down a bit for the big poker game at the end, but by that time you are relieved as it gives you a chance to catch your breath.
I recommend this movie for people who want to see an action movie with the kitchen sink thrown in just for the hell of it.
