I was interested in this movie as there are not really that many science fiction movies from Hong Kong and the premise seemed like a mash up of Close Encounters of the Third Kind with some Star Wars and comedy thrown in.
As it turns out it is very confusing and not helped by the subtitles on this release of the movie being very poor with upside down exclamation points and filler character in there for some reason, very shoddy. This might have just been better to release on VCD and be done with it but I have heard even those releases are not too hot.
It is a comedy in a very broad sense but I thought it would have been better made as a Hui Brothers movie as they did something a bit similar with the Last Signal that went slightly into science fiction territory. A lot of the jokes in this are about as funny as cancer and the whole thing has dated terribly.
There are still a lot of good things in this like the spaceship scene with the “Not Darth Vader” and the back projection for when it is flying around.
Some musical numbers seem to come out of nowhere but do still suit the style of the movie.
Not high on the list to watch but recommended if you are into science fiction and want to see how a company like Shaw Brothers would tackle such a genre.
