The Cave of the Silken Web (1967)
Director: Ho Meng-Hua
The Seven Sexy Spiders have a great life, hanging out in their caves on their webs dancing with their six arms dancing, eating passing travellers, being sexy. Their leader wants more though and sees the pilgrims on her crystal ball, ignoring the comment of one of them about Pigsy “he’s fat and cute!”
Knowing that Monkey will kick their arse six ways until Christmas if they try to grab Tripitaka, they decide to get tricky. Pigsy is the group’s weak point and they try to exploit it, which is not hard as he goes running off after any woman he sees.
Luckily, Monkey saves him from the spider ladies and turns him into a tree for safe-keeping, but in the ensuing fight Tripitaka gets captured and Monkey can’t get into the spiders’ cave due to the magic web at the entrance.
With the help of the local Earth God Monkey and Sandy look for a way to get past the web, little do they know the spider ladies have played another trick on them and Pigsy gets captured also when he turns into a piglet.
There are a lot of tricks and double crosses and Monkey eventually manages to get into the cave where he finds Pigsy is in on the action and the spider ladies are trying to sell each other out to get a bit of the priest. Sandy has gone off to get fearsome weapon “Seven Fires in the Oven”, which has the spider ladies packing death and another demon teaming up with yet another spider lady to do their own deal.
While there is a lot of stuff going on in this movie, it never gets confusing as there is always something to look at and the costumes and sets are great, especially the spiders’ cave with the big pot they plan to boil the priest in. I liked the giant webs being used as a bed in one scene.
There is some singing in this movie, but not as much as the first film although I did like it and it fits the moment. The music is also great in this movie and really suits the action, especially the fight scenes.
This is a great addition to the series and my favourite since the Monkey Goes West.
I would recommend this movie if you liked the Monkey TV series as it is the most like that series.
